      Colloquio

I rarely do this kind of thing simply because I feel that they will do very little good in the long run... but here goes: I went through the entire Epic hiring process and seemingly did very well... UNTIL they saw a picture of me... (more on that later)... as you will see if you do much research on EPIC, they have a well documented history of age bias when hiring... they seem to have the attitude that so many other companies have nowadays that young is better... "work'em hard, give them a nice "campus" to work at and they will be happy"... until they burn out. It is unfortunate that a company as big as Epic would devalue deep experience and skills and only value 60 hour work weeks... but... sadly they do. Here is a little hint from an old hand at this... hard work is for amateurs... smart, experienced people think ahead, plan the easiest route, then work quickly and deliver high-quality, bug-free work ahead of schedule and most importantly, they don't value long hours.... if you have to work 50-60 hour weeks, you are either, over tasked, undermanned, inefficient or poorly managed (or all of the above). I don't want you to think that this review is about "pay-back" for not being hired... frankly, they contacted me and I am already working for great pay in a secure job with the Government and therefore, jumping ship to join the Epic team would have been a step down in my career path... but... I was originally under the impression that they were an employee-focused company that would finally allow me to have a life outside of work yet allow me to blossom creatively... so... no... I didn't need this job in any way shape or form... but I was intrigued enough to give them a chance and go through their hiring process. I warned them up front verbally that I was 50 years old and if their policies leaned toward hiring younger and less experienced people that I was fine with that and I wouldn't waste their time... once the HR person stopped stuttering at my statement, she went to GREAT lengths to tell me that they NEVER judged on age... (Methinks thou dost protest too much...)... ;-) My skills and experience were so in line with their stated needs that my resume could have been copied from the job description and I have YEARS of experience working for one of their products primary competitors... so I feel fairly safe in saying that I probably should have been a front runner in most any candidate pool... especially since there aren't more than a couple of dozen people anywhere with the unique qualifications that they said they were looking for. So... back to this "Picture" statement I mentioned earlier... I went through a couple of phone interviews and advanced onto their "test"... if found it odd that they would give a generic "coder" test for a job that doesn't require any hard coding... but what I really found interesting is that they specifically take a picture of you and monitor you on a webcam during the test... yes, a (very polite) subcontractor asked me to look at the webcam and that she would take my picture for the records... Let me fill you in on what I look like... I'm 50 years old, not wrinkled and very high energy... but I am a Santa model year round so I have a well-coiffed, long, white beard which makes me look closer to 60 than 50... I'm a red-head by nature so I have to bleach my beard and hair to even it out for print work and live events.... Yep... you got it... I "looked" too old once they got my pic... (remember that unless that first interviewer took notes, they still had nothing stating what my age was other than this picture so they must have thought some guy 5 years past retirement was trying to get into their kids club... and we just couldn't have THAT could we? ;-) Anyway... I see that I've made a long story into an EXCRUTIATINGLY long story and I apologize to you dear reader for doing that to you... But... I felt that my unique situation might shed some light on Epics sad hiring practices... and hopefully you have already read between the lines of this story and see that if you don't value the experience that comes from age, you probably don't value a great many other things... and that what you DO value isn't going to be good in the long run for your employees. I wish I could grab the CEO of Epic and dozens of other companies that have adoped this kind of business culture and show them the long-term results of valuing quantity and appearance over quality and experience... And most important of all... I hope I gave you a clearer, deeper understanding of what you may be in for if you end up working for Epic... (or... at the very least... I hope you will take the time to dye your hair before they take your picture...) ;-) Take Care... appreciate yourself... and don't let anyone devalue who you are and what you bring to the party!
