Colloquio
I recently was on an active job search, met with 20 companies, and want to give reviews of my most positive and negative job interviewing experience. Gusto was my most unfavorable experience.
I liked the company and people there. The culture is very young and a bit cult-ish. You have to take off your shoes before going into their office (which is fine, but an example of how much they drive their culture down into everyone).
The entire interview is one case study question - all hypothetical questions. “Imagine if…, how would you approach…, how would you do this…” I spent 30 minutes with each interviewer talking through one question. I thought this was difficult because in my experience as a marketer, I've never sat around thinking about how to do segmentation, I just did it and showed my results. With the hiring manager, I tried to steer the conversation towards his business needs and laying out a plan to solve his problems, but he kept wanting to do thought experiments instead.
I've since landed another job with a startup company. I understand the importance of hiring people that will be a good cultural fit. But I think the culture at Gusto favors younger candidates with more idealism over proven experience. Older workers may just want to get the job done then go home to spend time with their kids rather than having communal dinners with work colleagues.
I appreciate my interview experience at Gusto, learned a lot, and like the people there. They do take feedback seriously. From the humble opinion of one job candidate, Gusto felt a little too cult-ish and “culture oriented” for my taste.
Please don’t let my opinion deter you from applying and interviewing at Gusto. They’re great people with a solid product. Check them out for yourself and see if it’s a fit for you!

“Imagine that instead of doing free timed trials, we only charge the customer if they’re happy with the product. How would you go about implementing this program?”

Very organized. The recruiter, Camille Ong, was very on top of communications and making sure you were in the loop. Only had to come into the office once for one round of interviews with many people across the marketing team.
Gusto has the most organized and well run hiring process I've ever encountered. Before each round the recruiter called me to tell me about who I'd be meeting with, and the types of questions they'd ask. This demonstrated a level of preparation and consistency not commonly found at startups.

The interview process was extensive and thorough, but I felt comfortable the entire time, like I was speaking with real people about real goals and values. I was kept looped in on all stages of the process and felt as though there were clear expectations about my skill set and responsibilities. The recruiter did a great job preparing me for the in-person interviews, walking me through the schedule, and talking about the company. I felt awesome about the company throughout the whole process, even when I was challenged.

I was asked a lot about how I aligned with the company's mission and values and whether I aligned with the heart of their business.
