A representative from this organization reached out to me to ask if I had interest in discussing this position (no indication that it was a first-round interview). To set the stage, this is not an entry-level position, and I exceed the qualifications for the role. Luckily, I over-prepared and had my resume ready, did ample research on the position, and had questions to ask. When the time came for our "discussion," it turned out to be a full-fledged phone screen/interview with standardized interview questions. It would have been much more appropriate to indicate this in detail in the initial outreach email, particularly given their proactive outreach. The actual interview was generic, and the interviewer was less than enthusiastic, following up after each of my responses with an ambivalent and sometimes questioning "okay" before heading to the next question. The most troubling part came at the end, when the interviewer (who again, initiated contact with me to discuss this position) asked bluntly if I was actively seeking employment or just being "opportunistic" (I am currently employed). Given the drastic reductions in force in federal employment and cuts to universities right now, my fields, I do not believe this to be an appropriate question. Opportunistic, of course, has a negative connotation. I was surprised to hear this given that I had set aside time in my schedule out of genuine interest in the role, hoping to learn more about the team and the org, whose mission I wholeheartedly endorse. After a promise to contact me either way within the next few weeks, I did not hear from them again. Based on these experiences, I would not consider this employer for an opportunity in the future. I do however hope that they continue to make a positive impact in the Rochester community.
