Spoke to professor in department to see if positions were available and if I would be a good fit for his research interests, then sent in application, transcripts, references, GRE scores to Graduate School for review before deadline. Once accepted by graduate school, went through phone interview with professor/advisor to discuss project and my motivations for the position.

It was based on past experience.So if you know your stuff you are good to go. now i am working as a graduate research assistant for a professor at state university of new york, Buffalo.
There is usually no interview process, you just need to show your capabilities when taking courses, showing up in classes and office hours is very important. Try to learn as much as skills related to your major as you can and be flexible
