I sent an email with CV and cover letter then about 3 weeks later got called for interview. I did a quick 15 minute presentation and we had a 30 min chat about my likes, my research interests, my future goals etc then finished by discussing visas

It depends totally on reference letter from previous professor, all communications by email. Should provide cover letter with your goals and expectations. Better to have good relationships with previous boss
