      Candidatura

Ho presentato la mia candidatura online. La procedura ha richiesto più di una settimana. Ho sostenuto un colloquio presso VIPKid (New York, NY) nel mese di giu 2017

      Colloquio

First, I applied via the VIPKID website. Basic name information, your highest level of education and also your teaching experience. I have a BA in English from a big ten university, and I substitute taught high school English and Journalism in a full time position. They responded with a request that I sign up for a skype style interview, to be held within 2 days. I needed to be prepared to teach a short lesson that was available online. My interviewer was in a call center and he was hard to understand. He arrived to our meeting late and his tardiness left zero time for a real interview, questions about the company, or any substantial feedback. I presented my class, and negotiated the pay. In all, I could expect to receive $19/hr, provided I did everything I was supposed to. I made it to the next level, and received an email confirmation of that by the next day. I had to do a quiz online that was pretty easy, provided you looked at the materials shared. Mock class 1 was the next step. I scheduled this 6 days after my initial interview. This consisted of an hour time slot, with a 25 minute class. Te interviewer was Canadian. She gave me thorough feedback after teaching the first 15 minutes section. I taught the next 10 minute section, incorporating her feedback. After this all was over, I received an email at around 8:30 the next day saying that I made it to the next level- teaching a mock 2 class. I also received a sort of rubric saying I had 42 points, but they would and did not explain the rubric or scoring. I have no idea what that 42 points was out of. For the next class, I had to teach for 25 minutes again. This interview was scheduled for the following Friday. This time, the class was for a first year student, and also a second year student. The process was the same. The interviewer asked what I had been working on to prepare for the next level. She loved to talk and barely let me ask any questions or respond or explain anything. Outside of the 25 minute class, I may have talked for 3 minutes, and she went on and on for the entire rest of the time. She was very sharp around the edges, not extremely friendly and really seemed to offer this canned type of generic feedback that I think she must give to everyone. The contrast between the two mock class interviewers was so extreme. Her video feed was EXTREMELY dark. She had technical issues in the beginning were her sound not coming through, despite everything testing perfectly on my end. It was hard to hear her. Meeting her really made me want to reconsider this whole thing because she really was awful! After the class was over, there was not much time for questions, and again, I practically had to interrupt her to ask a question because she kept going on for so long. The meeting ended very abruptly because she had to go to the next interview. I received an email 24 hours later saying, "Mock class unsuccessful. Your account has been deactivated." There was no further information with the reasons behind the decision. They did not tell me what to work on in the event I'd like to apply again. There was zero additional information, except a request that I fill out a survey to give THEM additional information. I ended up filling it out, but they really didn't deserve my time in doing that, as they couldn't bother sharing any feedback for me. I know I've been going on and on myself here, but I wanted to share my experience. I bought an orange t shirt that I wore for all three interviews. I had sparkly stars for a background, bought a headset, and spent time to perfect my lighting with a white sheet. I bought a computer mouse prop from the thrift store to use as a prop, since my mac doesn't use a mouse. I bought two puppets, many other props, and a wipe off board and markers, and craft supplies to make a creative reward system display. I printed and cut out alphabet flash cards. I spent time gathering all these supplies, practicing with them and crafting my reward system. I spent time reviewing the online prep videos, did a recorded 1 hour mock class workshop and also a live mock class 1 hour workshop. I also spent over an hour on the phone with a local VIPKIDS teacher. I wasted $40+ dollars on all this, plus a ton of time and energy. I'm mostly bummed that I can't get any of that time back. It was so NOT worth all that. I wish you the best of you decide to do it, but hopefully this information will help you to prepare and be a little more realistic a than I was. While they may want you to have an orange shirt and headset, keep it simple if you decide to do any of it. And for VIPKID, please work on having the same quality and consistency in your staff for interviews that you expect of your teachers/applicants. Also, you will gain credibility if you start providing feedback to your applicants. In all, this process took two complete weeks.

While we hope that when applying that our applicants are able to prepare as well as they feel they have, VIPKID does not require the purchase of classroom items or equipment during the process. Currently we are working to improve our recruitment procedures, and apologize for any miscommunication that occurred during your interview. We have already implemented several new guidelines for our recruiters to help minimize this, and we would love to hear back from you in the future.

Very lenghthy interview process, but the interviewers were nice and helpful. There were several steps to the process and it was pretty involved. I had to prepare a lesson beforehand

It was easy an straightforward. 1 interview and 2 mock classes to pass. They offer a contract for a year with option to renew after 1st contract is over. Overall the process last for about 2 weeks from the time you apply unless you are waitlisted.
