Covidien invests a great deal of effort in developing and maintaining its employees. Top performing employees are well rewarded. Turnover is low and you will often encounter employees who have worked for the company anywhere between 10-35 years. That is almost unheard of in today's society and economic conditions. Work life balance is top notch, with three years vacation, optional work from home opportunities, 37.5 hour work week and Friday summer hours. Product is strong and very innovative for the healthcare industry. Corporate values are strong and well promoted.

There is a lack of senior level strategy. Execution of strategy and internal communications among functional departments is ambiguous. There is often overlap in projects and system applications making for wasted time and resources. Short term fires are addressed, but lack long term solutions. There is a power struggle between global business/regional units and corporate strategic initiatives. Career advancement is limited, many senior level positions, but little for the individual contributor.
