I hate to use the term "rock-bottom compensation", but every team within the company that I've worked with has been riddled with holes due to people leaving over low pay. The health benefits attempt to make up for it, but overall their pay is well below the industry standard, especially in such a tech-heavy area like RTP. IBM, SAS, and soon enough an Apple campus right next door but positions here are 20-30% below market value compared to other companies in the area. Personnel constantly going elsewhere for better pay leaves huge gaps in the team left behind, and leads to overworking the underpaid employees who decided to stay, creating a vicious cycle.
