Vantaggi

Work from home, work anywhere in the world as long as you have good internet. Pays USD.

Svantaggi

At first it was amazing to work with such a great team, helping me progress as an online teacher. Students were happy I was happy, and I was content to work during peak hours even though I had seniority. However, in December 2013 something major changed. Suddenly there were no hours (which can be typically in December, but management said it would pick up.) and regulations about the tradeboard made a 3 hour minimum time difference if you were going to trade or drop a class. January February March and April still no hour (I went from 40-50 per week to 6) yet they continue to hire more teachers. Open English was finally forced to admit they had employed us not used us as true subcontractors, so they rewrote the contract. They have not however, offered to pay my back SS taxes. They need to be investigated by the Internal Revenue Service because hundreds of teachers paid their own taxes and received no unemployment benefits even though we were employed. Saddest part is for the students who pay top dollar to learn English and are crammed into very large classes where teachers are not allowed to teach, not to make corrections and not to give homework. The company is falsely advertising small classes and fluency in one year. They can't even keep the platform up and running, so fluency in several years is not possible.

Vantaggi

The students are the only positive aspect of the job.

Svantaggi

Very low pay compared to industry standards, with no bonus or end-of-year commission. No clear direction from upper management, expect constant changes and inconsistent expectations. The work environment feels disrespectful, and employees often feel undervalued. Working conditions have become more strict over time, creating a stressful and discouraging atmosphere. No teacher freedom to make instructional decisions; creativity is discouraged. Constant fear of job loss due to regular staff cuts and unstable staffing decisions. Recent restructuring resulted in a significant pay cut paired with an increase in working hours. Communication is poor, and decisions seem to be made without considering the impact on staff.
