I applied online. I included a cover letter with some specifics about how my experience fit this particular role, which I think helped. I got contacted by email to set up a phone screen with HR 2 weeks after my application. The HR phone screen was pretty basic and I think the HR rep was reading questions from a sheet. We also discussed salary expectations briefly. 2 weeks later I was contacted by the hiring manager for a phone interview. That was conversational and a good opportunity to explain my background and learn more about the role. Over the next two weeks I had another phone interview (with an interviewer who worked in a different city) and an in person interview with a couple potential colleagues. Both these next rounds were more difficult as they were a bit more technical and the questions were a little harder (though overall, it was still conversational - not a technical interview); I think this was just the style of the particular people who were interviewing me. Within 1 or 2 days, I got unofficial feedback that the interview had gone well, strongly implying there would be an offer. They then initiated a background check, and the formal offer came through about a week later. Unfortunately the pay was very low and I had a competing offer for much higher, so I declined. But the interview process was positive overall. The process took a little long but that was in part due to difficulty scheduling interviews with the various parties (on both my end and their end, due to busy schedules).
