      Colloquio per Project Engineer

      Candidatura

Ho presentato la mia candidatura online. La procedura ha richiesto più di una settimana. Ho sostenuto un colloquio presso Atlas Technica (Londra, Inghilterra) nel mese di giu 2023

      Colloquio

Very unusual interview process based on my experience with UK companies - makes sense since they're in the USA I suppose. There were tests to be taken before the first interview stage. One was a personality test involving picking words from a group of about 80 to describe how you think you should act at work, things like "thoughtful" "decisive" "forceful" etc then asked which of those words you thought applied to you. Second was a problem solving test which felt just like an online IQ test. I didn't feel like either of these tests would give any concrete results on anything so I'm not sure why their HR bothers with them. The first interview stage was basics like where do you live, why do you want to work for us, why are you leaving your current job. They also administered a hypothetical scenario where a user can't get to a website on their laptop. Odd choice of test when this is a project role not a first line support role but I suppose something has to filter out the non-technical applicants. The second stage of the process was a three HOUR long session. This is insulting quite frankly and the company really needs to change it, especially when it very cleanly divides into two parts that could be administered separately. The timezone difference meant I could schedule it for the evening my time but otherwise I would've had to take a half day off of my current job just to attend, the lack of respect for the applicant's time really put me off. First part was an hour of three further quizzes on networking, active directory, and Microsoft 365. Relevant subjects but some of the questions were pretty academic, like giving the definition for what a network is or what Active Directory does. Second part was a rundown of the role in detail then two technical scenarios - one for troubleshooting an inaccessible website on a lab machine they remoted me into (the same scenario as in the previous stage you may have noticed), then a role play on troubleshooting internet connectivity on a machine due to a server problem. These sounded fine on paper but again this was a project engineer role, not first/second line tech support, so I didn't feel like any part of this interview would've distinguished between a good or bad person for that role. Overall this was a needlessly demanding interview experience even though no part of it was technically advanced, and while the offered salary was competitive - above average even - it reflected poorly on the company itself. Questions on the tasks they said the job actually involved like 365 migrations, configuring AAD connect, managing Intune etc would've been a much better use of both of our time.

      Domande di colloquio [1]

      Domanda 1

First stage Troubleshoot a user who can't get to bloomberg.com Why are you leaving your current job? Why do you want to work for us? Second stage What is a network? What is Active Directory? What ports and transmission protocols do these standards use (SMTP, RDP, RIP, SSH, HTTP, HTTPS, SFTP) Troubleshoot a user who can't get to bloomberg.com with a remote lab machine Troubleshoot a user who can't attach a file to email (really their internet access is broken due to a server issue)

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed and thoughtful review of your interview experience. We appreciate your honesty and the effort you put into the process. We understand that our interview format may feel quite different from what’s typical in the UK, and we recognize that the length and structure—particularly the three-hour session—can be demanding. Our goal is to create a consistent and thorough evaluation process that reflects the technical depth and client-facing nature of our roles. That said, we’re actively reviewing how we can streamline the experience while still maintaining fairness and rigor. Our recruiting team manages the interview process, including the use of assessments. The personality and cognitive tests are intended to give us a broader view of how candidates approach problem-solving and team dynamics, though we understand they may not resonate with everyone. We also appreciate your feedback on the technical scenarios. While some exercises are designed to assess foundational troubleshooting skills, we agree that aligning questions more closely with the specific responsibilities of project roles would make the process more relevant and efficient. Your input is helpful as we continue to refine our approach.

It seems they only want to hire demi gods, wasted my time with several interviews and tests. they should be able to filter down who they want by 1st interview not merry go rounds. seemed to work out as a bullet dodged in my opinion

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're genuinely sorry to hear that your experience with our interview process left you feeling frustrated. We understand how valuable your time is, and it's never our intention to make candidates feel like they're on a "merry-go-round." Our goal is to find the best fit for both the role and the individual, and sometimes that requires multiple steps to ensure alignment on both sides. That said, we’re always working to improve and streamline our hiring process based on feedback like yours. We appreciate your honesty and wish you all the best in your future endeavors. It’s clear you’re passionate and thoughtful—qualities any team would be lucky to have.
