The application for this student position is intensive and highly competitive. First, apply online on the Government of Canada FSWEP online portal. Google it if you don’t have a direct link. You must have valid First-Aid CPR ‘C’, PCOC, and VHF-DSC certificates, as well as a valid drivers license (clean driving record) and boating experience. If you are selected from the pool of eligible candidates, you then write a 2-hour exam based on boating safety, navigational symbols, rules of the road, etc. The pass rate for the exam is 70%. If you are successful at this stage, you then complete an in-person graded interview with knowledge based questions. If you do well in the interview, then you will be offered a spot to attend training. It’s a VERY competitive position, but SO worth while. The IRB program has been the single best opportunity I have had in my undergraduate career. I think I scored 98% on the exam.
