POP is a mail protocol that pulls messages from your MX server directly onto your machine and then removes it from the server once successfully transferred onto the clients computer. IMAP is more of a cloud type message storage that maintains emails on a server so that whenever you set up a new email client it will point towards that IMAP server and pull the messages onto whatever device you're using.
