      Colloquio

The interview process was pretty straightforward after I applied for the position. Recruiter reached out to me within a week to set up an initial phone screen which ended up lasting about 30 minutes. Just the standard questions (Why Flexport? Why are you looking to leave your current company? Etc). I received an email a few days later from the same recruiter and was invited to have a video call with a person on the team. The video call was done through Zoom and last about 30 minutes as well. Questions were pretty similar, but got a tad more in depth and the position was discussed at length. I heard back the same day from the recruiter and was invited for an in person interview the following week. The in person interview was where things were a little different. I was told via email who I was going to be speaking with (3 people in total, all on the same team and in managerial roles), but wasn’t told 2/3 were going to be video calls. I was brought into a conference room that had a whiteboard, large TV screen and a table with a multi use phone/iPad on it. Once the call began, I was instructed to get up and go to the whiteboard to conduct an exercise with the first person I was speaking to. It was a little odd standing up in an empty room speaking to the person, but I did the best I could. The volume was a little spotty so I had to listen very intently. Once the expertise was over, the person asked me a few questions and then hung up. The next person was also via video call and had me conduct another excessive. This time however, I didn’t have to go up to the whiteboard, we just talked it through. After this one was over, I finally had my first in person interview with someone based in the office. I was asked some pretty straightforward questions and was told about the culture and growth of Flexport. It was about 5 days later that I received word via email that I was not selected for the position. The entire experience wasn’t negative, but it was a bit of a shock to me when I realized A. 2/3 people I would be speaking to would be via video call and B. Exercises would be a part of the interview. It was never told to me beforehand that I would have to work through exercises, so I was caught off guard from the start and struggled to recover. Having a little heads up would’ve been nice because I had prepared as though it was going to be a standard interview and also, that I would be speaking to people in person, not via video call. Other than that, it was a quick process which was nice.
