      Colloquio per Senior Software Engineer

      6 ott 2016
      Dipendente anonimo
      Chicago, IL
      Offerta accettata
      Esperienza positiva
      Colloquio facile

      Candidatura

Ho presentato la mia candidatura tramite un selezionatore. La procedura ha richiesto 3 settimane. Ho sostenuto un colloquio presso Gogo (Chicago, IL) nel mese di giu 2016

      Colloquio

Received a message from a Gogo recruiter on LinkedIn. I had a short phone screen with the recruiter that took about 30 minutes or so. Most of the questions asked were gauged around my current employment situation, compensation, and to get a feel for me as a person. I was asked to do a phone screen with the hiring manager a short time later. This phone screen lasted about 1 hour and the hiring manager dug a little deeper into my professional and personal background. We proceeded with an on-site interview where I met with 4 other individuals. The hiring manager, one of their peers, the hiring manager's boss and an individual in-charge of software acceptance testing. The interview did not have any technical questions. The questions asked were focused on my thought process for software design and architecture and how I go about solving problems. I was asked to talk about a few of my prior professional tasks that applied but was not asked any technical software questions (i.e. how to sort a deck of cards, etc.). It was obvious to me through the interview process that based on my 10-years of experience in the industry Gogo trusted I had the technical skills to do the job and the interview was mostly based around figuring out if I would be a good fit for the team. After my half-day on-site interview the recruiter reached out to me a few days later to offer me the position. I asked to have a follow-up meeting with another software engineer at Gogo (that was unable to meet me the day I came in for the interview). I met with that individual and the hiring manager over lunch one-day and was able to talk about "a day in the life of a software engineer at Gogo." It was very informative and what eventually lead me to accepting the job offer. I found out over the course of my follow-up conversations with the recruiter and hiring manager that they were building out the software engineering team and that explains why there was a lack of technical questions posed by other software engineers. Overall, Gogo is looking for technically sound "chameleon" software engineers that have an understanding of good software architecture. Looking for individuals that are problem solvers and capable of diving into a large multi-tier software system and understand the different software pieces that makes it all work (or not!).

There were a couple phone screenings with the recruiter and then the hiring manager who went out of his way to say he did not have a technical background. I should have seen this as a red flag.

One of the backend engineers mentioned an arbitrary website, he knew I was not familiar with, and then asked, as he hands me a whiteboard marker, 'how would you redesign it'?

First off, I was really interested with the job description and applied online with my resume. The recruiter got back to me asking about what times are good to talk and I mentioned the next day would be fine. Later I did not hear from the recruiter for close to 2 weeks (looks like he quit). I sent couple of followup email and no response yet (I thought the position was filled). Then another recruiter responds telling that the previous recruiter quit few days ago and that she would take it from here. Had a brief conversation with the recruiter the next day and she setup a phone interview with the hiring manager. Hiring manager was to call me at 3 and never received a call until 3:30 (he did apologize for calling late). Basic Object Oriented questions and looks like it went well and they arranged an in-person interview in few days. Asked me what I would have for lunch from Jimmy John's menu. Met the recruiter and she started by the tour of the workplace. I was to meet couple of senior engineers, managers and the VP. Everyone seemed reasonable except for one who didnt seem he was interested at all. Not sure if he understood my responses at all, he was turning them down as wrong answers. At one point after the interview he mentioned that he would sit and check his email until the next person arrives. Surprisingly, the interview was over after a chat with VP and no sign of lunch (I should have planned better). Nobody had a clue that there was supposed to be lunch. I felt a little disorganized at this point. Also, the recruiter never got back to me about the outcome. In about 2 weeks I emailed and they said they already hired someone!

I did a phone screen with an HR screener, then a technical phone screen with the hiring manager, then an in-person interview with the hiring manager and 3 others (managers and above). The in-person interviews were very heavy on Java knowledge and state machines. Interviewers covered a good range of topics (coding up to system design) but did not get a chance to meet any future peers, only managers and up. Most interviewers were kind and informative and enthusiastic, but one was extremely distracted checking their email.

Write a Java function to sort an array. Draw a state diagram for a garage door opener circuit. Design a point-of-sale system for a large retailer with an online presence. Also, many Java trivia questions, like in which Java version did this feature come out, what is the difference between these 2 annotations, etc.
