How do I handle irate situations?

I responded my explaining that I am a good listener and that in most cases the behavior will reverse if you listen and eliminate the problem vs being argumentative. When people are irate they need to be heard and someone to demonstrate empathy towards them and the situation while working to resolve the issue.
