How do you handle communication with difficult managers?

You have to use the internal tools at your disposal to locate the highest ranking Manager , Supervisor , Business Manager and write to them about the entire project and how favoritism is a disgustingly huge factor within this organization and how poorly you have been treated. Personally that is exactly what I would do, poke around and go to the highest management you can OUTSIDE the project because everyone internally is kissing someone else's behind.

Avoiding communication issues as much as possible is important from the start. A candid conversation with the manager at the start of the assignment (and as needed) to determine communication preferences, style, pet peeves, etc., as well as learning to adapt to the manager's personality and style, are critical to success in the assignment.
