How would you handle a difficult customer?

I would politely ask the customer if there is anything I can help them with to resolve whatever it is that made them upset. If it is something that I can resolve, them I would work it out. If it is something that is beyond my job description or that should be done by someone with a higher qualification, I would get my immediate supervisor.
