      Colloquio

The interviews for MTCC Americorps Positions are in two rounds. Once all my documentation to apply was in I was able to schedule an interview by conveniently selecting a time slot. My first interview was great and got me really excited about the organizations I'd applied for. I got an official offer within two hours and accepted it the next day. The second interview is supposed to be more of just a formality with the site you matched with where you can quickly meet your supervisor. Off the bat there were some red flags that I ignored. The person that would've been my supervisor seemed to want to get our intro done as soon as possible and kept trying to schedule at really ridiculous hours (ie 8pm on a Friday night or 7:30 am on a Sunday). Once we actually got to the introductions she was just very hostile for no reason. During the first question which was a very basic "tell me about yourself" she cut me off mid sentence to tell me this wasn't an interview and just a get to know you conversation. In another one of her questions she asked me to tell her about a boss I'd really liked in the past. When I started to talk about one of my old managers at a grocery store who was extremely kind she cut me off again to tell me that she didn't care if they were nice, but that the purpose of the question was to find out if liked bosses who let me do my own projects. She also made a lot of assumptions about me which was really weird. I'd mentioned I'd lived in a dorm and she told me I didn't have many life experiences in response. Or she also just thought for no reason I was from a wealthy suburb when I'm from a working class rural area. She also seemed very unsure of my ability to do the job. She'd mention some aspect of the job and then would ask if I could do that (ie contact different people to pull projects together) and when I'd respond that's something I'd done before or was totally comfortable doing she'd respond with I don't know if you could. She also accused me multiple times of holding back my personality, but it was our first time meeting and she had cut me off multiple times and created an incredibly hostile environment in just the meeting. I don't know if she'd had a lot of people back out on this role before and she wanted to make sure that I was really committed or what, but there's significantly better ways to go about it. I was holding back tears throughout the interview and cried off and on throughout the rest of the day. I think MTCC has some great people working for it, everyone else I dealt with was super understanding and welcoming, I just think they might need to vet their host sites a little bit better because it really turned me off of any positions within the organization.
