I interviewed for an editor position for Select and it was hands down the most grueling interview process I've ever been through. There were a total of 5 interviews for this particular job (which, by the way, was a fairly junior level) and I made it to the third round. The first two rounds were a phone call and then a video interview, which were both fine. For the third round, however, they gave me a take-home test (which is a huge red flag in and of itself because most of the time these companies just want free labor) and assured me it would only take about 45 minutes of my time and that it would be "super easy" and I'd have 48 hours in total to complete it. Well, that turned out to be a blatant lie because it ended up taking me 14 hours in total to complete and was extremely difficult - unlike any other writing assignment I've ever done for an interview. I stayed up until 2am finishing it and had to skip half of my workday, which is completely unacceptable for an UNPAID assignment. It also required an expert level of knowledge about a specific skill that was listed NOWHERE on the job application, so I was completely blindsided by that. But in the end I realized that they gave applicants such a ridiculous test because, like many cheap companies nowadays, they are trying to get out of having to train new hires. And to be honest, I realized that I don't want to work in such an unsupportive environment with people who clearly don't respect my time. (As a side note, the recruiter was lovely. I have nothing but good things to say about her.)

The initial sift was laid back, quite conversational. The interviewer wanted answers to all the expected questions, eg. why do I want to work at NBCU and what I can bring to the team.

Strangely, the interviewer asked what route I'd take to the newsroom. I'd never been asked that before and hadn't really thought about it! I'd advise future interviewees to consider this, as I think the interviewer wanted to know if I had really thought it all through.

It was a very standard interview. They asked about strengths and weaknesses and past experiences. Was fairly short. It was over a video call. I knew it didn't go well.
