      Colloquio per Engineering Manager

      Colloquio

Overall, a very positive experience! Roblox subscribes to the philosophy that "everyone is their own CEO", meaning that managers have wide latitude to define how their teams operate, including the interview processes for each team. That seems to be responsible for the widely varying experiences people have reported. The process I went through was a series of phone interviews followed by a final round panel interview, discussing my management style, experience managing teams, thoughts on process and strategy, aspects of my personality, and a bit of coding and technical design. Unlike applicants for some other teams at the company, I didn't need to complete an online coding challenge, though I certainly wouldn't have balked at one. What struck me most about Roblox was the passion everyone brought to their work - everyone from Karen, the office assistant, to the recruiting leads and the managers, directors, VPs, and CEO were super enthusiastic about working there and creating such a great content creation platform, and they expect the same of applicants! I was glad to see it, as that means they have a good handle on company culture and look for more than just passing a technical bar. The process moved very quickly, as it should when hiring senior people in this area, and they turned around the offer in record time. My one complaint about the process was that it became a high pressure sell once the offer was in my hand. The offer expired within only one day of issuance, and they kept pushing me for a very immediate start date, which would have left me little time to wrap up my current work and move. Most companies I've worked at in the past hired for overall talent and allocated them where there was need shortly before the start date; the need to fill candidates on a predefined roadmap definitely seems like a downside of hiring for specific openings. Timing issues and exploding offers aside, I'm really psyched by the passion everyone is displaying for their work and I'm excited to join them in it!

It was interesting because the position I originally applied for and was the best fit for disappeared due to internal reorganization. So I ended up interviewing for a position I was probably not as good of a fit for. I Did a recruiter screen, tech screen, manager screen, then full panel for a management position.

I signed an NDA and can't give specifics. System design, coding and management interviews. I thought they were mostly good questions. I suspect the lack of an offer was because the hiring manager and I didn't communicate very well, which gave me pause as well for that specific role.

TLDR: recruiter ghosted me half way through the process and won’t even respond to emails anymore. I applied for an EM role and a recruiter set up a call. She was about 10 mins late to call me. On the call, I got a sense she might be overloaded. She said she’ll take all of my information to the hiring manager and get back to me in a couple of days. A week goes by and no email from her, so I followed up with her and she said they’d like to move forward with a technical screen with Karat. I completed the screening and waited for a week to hear back but didn’t. So, I followed up again and she apologized for not getting back sooner and said she’ll have an update for me the next day. 2 weeks go by and still no email from her and I sent her another follow-up email a week ago and she still hasn’t responded. Please don’t waste candidates’ time if you aren’t going to follow through with them.

Technical screen has a code review component and a coding component. They’re both fairly easy if you know how to spot patterns in questions.

Recruiter reached out for Software Engineer position - I mentioned that I was interested in Engineering Manager position with links to some positions from their careers site. We had an initial call about my background and experience, she kept evading (multiple times) questions around which position I was being considered for, and just sent a "Systems Engineer" position (which I had no interest in pursuing) insisting that everybody starts from this position while interviewing, and later they see where you are a fit. The interview process: Karat Interview, Virtual on-site(4-5 interviews), which may be followed by conversations with senior executives. During my Karat interview (1hr), the interviewer spent the first 20 or so minutes: introducing himself, asking about my background, my projects and discussing my experience. He then clearly stated that there would be 1 question that will be asked and the expectation is to finish it in the remainder of the time with completion and passing of all test cases being the only objective (no need for the solution to be optimized). I was able to finish the question within allotted time, with all test cases passing. The recording was then shared with Roblox, and a week later I receive an email from the recruiter saying that there isn't a "good technical match". I asked for feedback and was shocked to learn that the expectation was to solve multiple questions in the Karat interview! What I don't get is: Why was there such a major disconnect in the actual expectation of Roblox, and the expectation communicated by the Karat interviewer? Also, why were the first 20 mins of my interview wasted in discussing projects if the expectation was to solve multiple (3) questions?! This is a clear indication of a company running with chaos: Lack of clear communication within the company and outside - on hiring process and expectations Incompetence of recruiter to answer candidate's questions I would never want to work for such a company - glad the result turned out the way it did!
