Talked with the chief scientist over the phone and felt immediately like it was some kind of a scam. But I was desperate for a job so when I got invited for an in-person interview I made the 3 hour drive. After an interview with the CEO I was excited by the idea and the passion of the company but scared by the idea that they were small, in a shared work space, and seemed to have a lot of promises that things would soon be different than what I was seeing. I was given an offer of 55k/year and coming out of school with a master's in mechanical engineering, I was hoping for a little more. After a counter-offer of 60k I was told abruptly that they were rescinding their offer and moving forward with another candidate.
