Relational or OLTP databases are intended for faster writes and used for a high volume of transactions; they also usually have a highly normalized schema. Analytical or OLAP databases are intended for faster reads with wider tables requiring less joins and the schema is usually a star or snowflake design with dimension and fact tables.
