This isn't an illegal question unless it relates to nationality, country of origin, or birthplace. While not the BEST interview question (i don't see how knowing this is helpful), it is definitely not an illegal question.

It's essential to demonstrate that you can really go deep... there are plenty of followup questions and (sometimes tangential) angles to explore.
There's a lot of Technical Recruiter experts who've worked at Mixpanel, who provide this sort of practice through mock interviews. There's a whole list of them curated on Prepfully.
