      Colloquio

      I was initially contacted by an in-house recruiter via LinkedIn about a UX Engineer position with the Premiere Agent design systems team at Zillow. The initial message wasn't your standard recruiter email blast—which I appreciated—and we scheduled a 30-minute phone screen the following day. The call, while pretty standard, was very productive and I was very interested in the position. We then scheduled a call with the main developer/hiring manager on the team for the following week. The call with the main developer was also about 30 minutes, and it was clear that we were both on the same page with our approach to web development and design systems in general. He described what the next steps would be—a coding exercise that should take no more than 3 hours to complete—and it was sent to me a few days later. The exercise itself was a straightforward exercise to follow the provided design instructions and create a card component, which I did in React. Despite the instructions stating that it should take up to 3 hours to complete, it only took me 30 minutes due to the fact that there were no JavaScript requirements; I felt like I had missed something in the instructions. After submitting the exercise, we scheduled an in-person meeting at a coffee shop to go over the code with the main developer. The main developer told me he was very pleased with my code, and that he was interested in my approach because he had never seen some of the basic HTML5 elements I used (which seemed like a red flag). The conversation was very amicable, but I was now concerned about the seniority level for this position. Afterward, I confirmed with the recruiter that the position was for a senior developer, and after explaining what the in-person interview would be like, I was told I'd receive further details shortly. I received the in-person interview schedule three days later at 8PM, but wasn't even given 24 hours to reply before I received another email stating that they had cancelled the interview because they hadn't heard from me "in a few days" (despite speaking on the phone 2-3 days prior and only being told that interview details would be forthcoming). When I asked if they could reschedule, I was told that it would be best to speak on the phone, which to me felt like an attempt to blow me off. I didn't reply and instead accepted a job elsewhere. Frankly, I was furious and found it entirely unprofessional to not give me at least a few waking hours to respond, especially since the details did not arrive until late in the evening. I was very much in contact with the recruiter and the other scheduling assistants, so the idea that I was MIA is ludicrous. I was very excited for this interview and the position, but I cannot recommend even interviewing with Zillow because of this entire waste of time. It's a shame that this team is being handled by such amateurs.
