High turnover. In my three years at the company I have seen so many store managers and assistant store managers leave abruptly for some of the reasons I am listing here. They are always hiring, not because they are growing, but because once people figure out what working at Altar'd State is really like they get out. Inconsistent scheduling. The schedules are difficult and have been the entire time I worked there. Sometimes you get your schedule a day in advance, sometimes it's a month; however the company will change payroll or add/delete tasks last minute on you. For example adding 800 markdowns for next week so you will have to add shifts to get that done which means calling all of associates to see who can work because you have already sent out the schedule. Or taking away payroll hours so you have to rework the existing schedule and then call or email everyone telling them the schedule has changed. This happened constantly. No set policies or procedures. For anything. There is no set policy for tardiness or call-outs, dress-code is extremely vague and up to interpretation, what to do if the alarm goes off in the middle of the night, even the return policy on the receipt is different than the one online and you are not supposed to enforce either. No annual reviews. I have had one annual review the first year I worked for the company and I received a raise. Then the next year they kept rescheduling it and pushing it back until it got taken off the calendar all together, then they raised everyone's base pay which sounds great but then I was back to making the same amount a newly hired ASM did even though I worked for the company for two years. Then this year they did no annual reviews and cut everyone's pay 10% because of covid and took away PTO days. They actively sensor information coming from stores to home office and vice versa. They are constantly changing where they upload information and it's inconsistent. It takes 30 minutes of searching to figure out who to contact to place a maintenance request. They DO NOT care about their employees. They like to say they "Stand out for Good" but our store had an AC malfunction for months, once it got to May it was almost 90 degrees in there everyday and we were working 8 hrs a day in it. We sent emails, we complained to our DM but they just let it be until July. We were told that other stores were dealing with the same issues and we needed to be more positive. I would probably be more positive if I wasn't covered in sweat everyday, also yes people still tried on merchandise so if you shopped there you were buying clothing people sweat in. No career opportunities unless you are willing to relocate. The stores are pretty spread out so if you want to move up you will have to move around. Clear favoritism. The best thing you can do to advance your career at Alta'rd State is pretend nothing is ever wrong and give no criticism. They call this "being passionate" because the rules don't apply to those who are "passionate". Want to take times off during blackout dates? It's no problem! Incorrectly fill out and file nightly banking paperwork? That's totally fine! Till is short? It's just money who cares! On the flip-side they will write-up and fire people who are not "passionate enough" and raise real issues. No such thing as work-life balance. I got texts and calls and emails constantly, even if I was on PTO. I cannot count the amount of times I've had to excuse myself from a family dinner because I was getting multiple calls from the store or my SM or my DM. When I brought this up as a professional goal (to have a better work-life balance) I was told by my DM that a work-life balance isn't something to strive for but instead it should all exist happily together. Covid response. We were closed for a couple of weeks, the full-time staff was paid but everyone took a 10% pay cut. It sounded fair until they announced later the pay cut would be until next Feb, also they were taking away a week of our PTO as well. That's over half of our PTO time for being closed less than two-months. I would have been better off being furloughed and getting unemployment for that time. Also when one of our employees tested positive for the virus we were told not the alert the part-time staff because they would not want to work which would leave us understaffed. We just had to encourage them to not work if they were running a fever; however not encourage them to go get tested? Basically they didn't care as long as the store was still staffed, but don't worry if an associate really needed the money they wouldn't inform us anyway and come in sick because a positive test meant 2-3 weeks of not being put on the schedule = no money. It's just a matter of time before everyone in those stores has it which is one of the reasons I left so I wouldn't pass it along to my family. All in all the benefits are not bad (if they aren't taking them away) and the pay is pretty decent (but take off 10%); however if you are looking for a long-term career I recommend going somewhere else, you will be much happier for it. I've been reading all the reviews too and honestly if you want a clear picture of Altar'd State just sort by lowest rating. All the positive ones were written because Aaron Walters told everyone to do it on a conference call. This job was like being in a bad relationship. When I would talk about it my friends and family would raise concerns and see all the red flags I was ignoring. Then once I started to see what they were talking about I kept telling myself it would get better; it was just a rough patch but if I stick it out it will be worth it. I had invested so much of my time and myself to that job and to Altar'd State that I was afraid to leave. Now that I'm finally out I can honestly say that my biggest regret is not leaving sooner. Each day in that place was worse than the last.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Unfortunately, some of the types of challenges that you describe do occur. Changes based on current business trends can lead to schedule adjustments and rushed requests for follow up from our Store Leaders. At times, an important repair request can be delayed due to a vendor or supply issue. And yes, during the current pandemic, we have asked our associates to accept a 10% reduction in their pay. It sounds like you may have experienced more than your fair share of these challenges during your time with us, and that is truly unfortunate – we’d never want this type of experience to occur for any of our associates. While we do accept your feedback, we feel that it’s important to note that it does not represent the experience of the vast majority of our associates, and in some cases, it does not represent the truth. Much of our hiring has most certainly come from our growth, as we’ve grown from a single boutique to our current 120 locations over the past ten years. We’ve added positions to these locations and enhanced our operations leadership team, which has led to career advancement opportunities for hundreds of our associates. We certainly don’t “actively sensor information coming from stores to home office and vice versa”. As a company, we embrace feedback and work to improve every aspect of what we do every day. We have multiple programs and resources in place for associates to share their feedback, and we have an extensive track record of responding to such feedback with improved policies, procedures and benefits that positively impact the work experience for our associates. Benefits such as our generous associate discount, 4 week paid sabbatical program, 14 week paid maternity leave, monthly paid volunteer hours for all associates, student debt repayment program and emergency backup care program are all examples of benefits we provide to our associates based directly on their feedback over the past few years. Lastly, we’d like to address your description of our response to the current pandemic. There is no doubt that to one degree or another, all of us have been negatively impacted by what’s occurred. And while we don’t want to criticize anyone’s experience over the past few months, your description of what occurred at Altar’d State is at best, incomplete. From the very beginning of the pandemic, we put our people first. This is our aim in every situation, and we didn’t let the unforgiving circumstances of COVID-19 change this fact. Early on, and well before we asked the rest of our associates to accept a 10% pay decrease, our leadership team reduced their pay by 20%. We only resorted to the 10% reduction across the organization once we made the decision, earlier than the vast majority of those in our industry, to close our stores and home office to protect the health of our associates. Our CEO communicated these changes via weekly updates to the entire company and explained the reasoning behind every action being taken. Our full-time associates were paid for the duration of the shutdown, which for all of our locations, was much longer than “a couple weeks”. While we can appreciate that you may have preferred to have been furloughed, thousands of your fellow retailers would likely disagree. Many furloughed retail professionals saw that temporary situation turn into a permanent layoff, leaving them searching for new opportunities just as our country was experiencing unprecedented unemployment rates. By asking our associates to sacrifice temporarily, we’ve been able to continue employing all of our associates throughout the pandemic and avoid resorting to any layoffs or the closure of any locations. Starting at the beginning of our reopening process, we made even more adjustments to our benefits to help support our associates. We’ve increased our flexibility in hours of operation and scheduling to fit the needs of our team. We offer all associates two paid weeks off if they are diagnosed with COVID-19. We’ve increased the amount of payroll hours in our stores to allow for an enhanced cleaning process, and we’ve supplied all locations with the supplies necessary to keep their stores clean and safe for themselves and their guests. Regardless of the decisions we’ve made as a company, the most important part of this story has been the incredible hard work, resolve and ingenuity of our amazing associates. Yes, they have sacrificed for each other and for our collective future as a team. They’ve had to be flexible, creative and more determined than ever before. They have rallied to safely reopen our stores and have done so with an even greater enthusiasm for serving our guests. We’re incredibly appreciative of these efforts, and we’re more encouraged then ever before about what we can accomplish as a team. Our business is getting stronger every day, and we look forward to rewarding our talented, dedicated associates that have helped make this possible. You mentioned in the closing of your review that that you wrote it “so that when someone is looking at reviews to decide whether to apply here or not (just like I did) they will pass up on Altar'd State”. Literally nothing, can’t think of one positive thing

I’ve been with the company for years and watching its continuous downfall has become almost comical. Two years ago we took major pay cuts (like 15%) because of the economy but this year they sent us to the Virgin Islands on this over the top meeting that must have cost a fortune. I’d rather have the money in my bank versus a trip I was forced to go on with senior leadership that are absolute horrific people in general and evil businesses people. It all felt like a big propaganda event with tons of videoing and picture taking so they could come home and post all over linked in and social media about how WONDERFUL it is to work there. Don’t even get me started on the new Little House on the Prairie denim dresses we have to wear because they hire managers that aren’t even strong enough to coach to a dress code. How can you run a store if you can’t even tell someone what they’re wearing inappropriate? Instead now we look like a bunch of little followers of the cult everyone already says it is. As long as we say we “stand out for good” at every opportunity it must mean it’s true right? To know who else brainwashed people into thinking bad things are good for them? CULT LEADERS.
