This creates an unfair dynamic, where you're blamed for circumstances beyond your control. Cultural and Communication Barriers: Co-workers and reviewers may lack training in cross-cultural communication, leading to misunderstandings and behavior that feels unprofessional or rude. Unfortunately, this can negatively impact your reviews, leaving you with little recourse. Unfair Hiring Decisions: Even exceptional performance—completing all projects, delivering high-quality presentations, and demonstrating leadership—can result in a non-hire decision if you encounter an unhelpful mentor, onboarding buddy, or manager. The system doesn’t seem to reward effort and achievement consistently, which can be deeply demotivating.
