      For the time that I worked for Auckland Libraries as a librarian assistant, a few of the pros included being able to have a say in how some local library events were run, taking part in certified library training, as well as having the opportunity to be mentored as part of the Auckland Council cadet program.

      The only downside for me was the finite length of time that came from being a cadet/intern for a year. Unfortunately for me, I had a cumulative amount of time off from work due to serious health issues, so I cannot fault Council for wanting to protect themselves in this way.

      As part of a school program, I was allowed to come over during the holidays and work a full week as a proper librarian. The staff were very welcoming and understanding and I think that's a very important part of working. While they couldn't actually hire me, many Libraries will let you work with them to gain the required experience.

      I was just quite sad I didn't get to spend very long there. The job openings for librarians is a bit packed in the area which was unfortunate.
