The job itself is deceiving because the job description implies you will be consulting with employees about benefits. The reality is that this is a pressured sales job but you manipulate the employee so they think you work for their company in human resources. The sales pitch is simple. An employee calls believing that you will assist them in enrolling in their company benefits. After skimming over the core benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision), you go into discussing additional benefits that offer little to no value. Your job is to convince them that you work for the same company they do and that the Voluntary Benefits are important to them and will “fill in the gaps” of their substandard Medical plan. There is an opportunity to talk to current employees once a year. We were told this was a chance to sign them up for even more plans and that we needed to get even more money out of them. You will be evaluated on how much you can sell to each employee, which is why we do not have their best interest in mind, we just want to sell as much as we can. After time in the position, you will feel dishonest as employees are trusting you to assist them in the benefits they need, when in fact, you are there to sell them ineffective benefits that are not necessary. The management team struggles to lead as most of them do not have college degrees and are in the position due to political connections, going to the same church or they are related to the owner of the company. Lastly, the company does not offer yearly raises or bonuses, so essentially you are taking a pay cut every year as your pay stays the same while inflation occurs every year. The company convinces themselves that they are doing something good for the employees by throwing an annual Christmas party but the employee feels he or she would rather just have the money and they are basically taking what should be our Christmas bonus and spending it on a party. I believe this is a major reason why the company has experienced almost 50% turnover as well because a $100 gift does not make up for the pay cut you are essentially taking year after year. Further, the party occurs during office hours and you have to make up your work on another day. There is no career progression and the company culture has more of a “club” mentality than a professional work environment. The positive reviews on Glassdoor were no doubt written by upper management to counter balance the authentic reviews about the company.

The variety of positions - the Benefit Coordinator and Benefit Communication Specialist roles vary depending on the client you are assigned to. This means that you could land a totally remote role or a hybrid role. My experience is that BCI is very flexible and will agree to whatever the client wants.

Even though the duties vary based on the client, the pay seems to be applied the same across the board. For instance, if you are placed with a client that requires higher level customer service/research - you will be paid the same as if you were working for a client that does not require complex assistance.
