Likewise, if you get hired in to fill a project where you’re not the best fit, and as a result you get descoped from your contract, then you have to go into the internal job search at the company. The thing is, already being on the BAH payroll does not necessarily give you a leg up on internal openings, because some hiring managers prefer to go straight to external hires. Also, I churned around for most of a year on three separate projects that lasted for only three months apiece before I landed in a place where I could build some momentum. This was frustrating, because I wasn’t growing and could not ask for raises as a result. The only reason I didn’t leave then was because I couldn’t get an external job offer without having a success to boast of.
