The Credit Agricole group does not want to own an investment banking division. I have worked on deals in the various Americas Rep Offices, European Branches, and Head Office, and everywhere the mentality is the same: pursue the same roster of clients and their subsidiaries that have been with the bank since it was Credit Lyonnais (or even earlier, Banque Indosuez). It is incredibly difficult to convince management to let us pitch clients that do not fit the "Traditional" CACIB mold, even if these kinds of clients are shrinking by the day. I suspect that the Credit Agricole group's plan for CACIB, and by extension the New York Branch, is to let the roster of existing clients very slowly shrink until CACIB is small enough to close in some ten or twenty years.
