The campus is very pleasant, for employees the amenities are very good. You have full access to most all of the services that students do which is far better than most any corporate jobs you'll find.

While the salary (at least in my case) was good, the unreasonable expectations of work are not. Also, there is a 6-month waiting period during which you are not permitted to take time off. I became ill with the flu during this period and they required me to come into work even though I was unable to actually complete any useful work. There is no available maternity leave (extremely strange for a women's university). There is only long-term disability, and the opportunity to bank sick days (once you can use them). Human resources is not a friendly place to seek help, they will only recite university policies and seem entirely unconcerned with helping. Information technology is unreliable and most of the campus technology is out of date, poorly managed, Finance was in poor order; when money was needed for campus improvements, funds were shifted from one budget to another with no regard to impact on the "donor" department. The general feeling I got was that because of gossip, there was a great deal of resentment across departments as well as within departments. Employees frequently speak poorly of superiors, superiors speak poorly of employees and their own superiors. I'm not sure where this culture characteristic has come from or why it is allowed to persist, but it is extremely pervasive and makes working at Chatham unpleasant.
