I was hired to fill a position that had been vacant for over a year and a half. The expectations for my position were never really explained. I was supposed to remotely manage five junior and senior staff, yet three of those people where siloed into projects with external agencies, and I had no idea what they were working on. The onboarding process was equally confusing and disorganized, with multiple broken links to training videos. I was simply thrown into the shark tank and expected to swim. I was supposed to meet weekly with my supervisor for updates and coaching, but those meetings were routinely cancelled due to other scheduling conflicts. When I wasn't in a meeting, I had no idea what I was expected to work on. Six weeks into my tenure, I finally had that meeting with my supervisor, and when the HR director came on the Zoom call, I knew I was going to be fired. There was no previous indication that my performance wasn't what they expected of me. I realize that with an "at will" employment, the employer has the right to terminate someone without warning. I can't imagine what I could have done in my initial six weeks that was so terrible that it merited a firing without explanation. I was simply told that "This is not a good fit for you" and that there had been multiple complaints about my performance, yet none were given any specifics. As others have alluded in their comments, I did once express some discord with the organization's political agenda, and perhaps that led to my demise.
