It is not an academically competitive culture with students vying to be top of the class, instead collaboration is encouraged and almost necessary to succeed in classes. There is a wide variety of research opportunities for physics students with a linear accelerator on campus, the National High Magnetic Field Lab a few miles away, a high energy group with strong ties to CERN, and a lot more.
