GM believes the best way to increase profitability is to reduce labor (fire employees) rather than improve processes. Very short sighted; no long term vision. Supervisors in the Steel plant are incompetent and unwilling to learn. They're there just to cash a paycheck, not to improve the business. They wouldn't know how to run the areas if the team leads left. Low pay for high stress environment. Supervisors are also not held accountable for poor performance. If an issue arises that needs to involve Human Resources, HR will ALWAYS take the side of the person that is higher in authority, not necessarily the person who is in the right. Most of all, the management team as a whole believes the best way to increase performance and profitability is to put pressure on employees to go faster and work harder rather than looking for ways to get the same amount done while reducing labor (i.e process improvements and automation).
