Vantaggi
The other tutors and the students were great. I also had good relationships with my students' parents.
Svantaggi
I have been an independent contractor for about five years, and a private tutor for over ten years.
The top management left lots to be desired. A few things I wish I had known before I started:
1. They seem to operate as if they are the smartest people in the room, which does not gel well for a tutoring company that intentionally hires smart people. Most of their interactions seemed to reflect this attitude.
2. The pay schedule--while obviously a company sets its pay schedule in a way that makes sense to it, when I left, it was stated to be once in the middle of the month, and once almost at the end of the month, but this ended up being approximately a 3 week/1.5 week split between paychecks.
3. Additionally, despite the stated pay dates, more than half of my paychecks were late, and only once did I receive a note letting me know that my pay would be late. Further, when I suggested that this was unprofessional, the response I received was that it takes 3 business days to process the bank drafts, and that once it left the company's hands, they could not control when it arrived to my bank account. They also subsequently changed the policy in the employee manual to read "on or around" XX date, instead of "by XX date".
4. Also for pay, when pay dates fell on a weekend or holiday, we were generally paid after that date rather than before--of course this is a personal preference, but it would've gone a long way toward feeling cared about.
5. Overall, I did not feel valued at all by upper management, and there were very few instances where I felt genuine interest or camaraderie from them. This is not a place I would work again.
