But more important than the emperor's personal vanity are the townspeople's reaction: thunderous applause. Everyone enthusiastically affirms they see the clothes right up until a child's observation pierces the bubble of suspended belief. Gong's corporate story largely tracks with the fable. Leaders have cultivated a sycophantic culture that rewards and perpetuates delusions of grandeur. I have only heard glowing and unqualified endorsements from Gong's leadership that, among other things: the business is financially healthy; the tool is clearly superior to anything on the market; the 600% premium to alternatives is clearly justified; the AI engine is state of the art; the upward mobility track is a rocket ship. It took one down quarter (and likely a call from the general partners) for the entire delusion to pop like a balloon.
