Great environment, fun co-workers, lots of freedom as an intern to work on real design issues. I was fully respected as a part of the team and had a great time working interdepartmentally with engineers. Housing for interns is provided, which definitely made the summer more fun because it was easy to make friends. Great small team of designers that really made me feel at home, and I was very sad to leave at the end of the summer.

Sometimes the management would move deadlines around in a seemingly unorganized manner, but this was also during a time when the CEO was directing the company from abroad with a substantial time difference. Hexbug's design language is not particularly refined or modern, which is fitting for toy design, but not my personal favorite.

Very practical experience for package design (both graphics and production) and social media. 9-6 days, usually no need for overtime. Modern intern dormitory near the office that creates a community among interns (in fact, I'm still friends with some of my teammates years later). Modern office with free lunch every day. Lots to do in Greenville, Rockwall and (a bit further) Dallas if you have a car.

High-pressure corporate environment. Often unreasonable turnarounds and revisions (since graphics is the last link in the chain before production). The periods leading up to trade shows can be especially hectic. The few times my team worked overtime, we were in the office until midnight, and it was a thankless job. Internship contracts are 2-3 months long, and depending on the time period, your department may not be looking to hire full-time. Micro-managing, feelings of constant surveillance, and occasionally even condescension.
