Sometimes we confuse practices and principles and become dogmatic about practices that we shouldn't have been fixated on. We are getting better at this, but it sometimes takes us a long time to come around. Benefits have been so good for so long and team members are so important to us as a company that perhaps a touch of entitlement has creep in. This can be hard to discuss because as doing so could inadvertently silence perspective and opinions which the company so values. An example for me was the long and lengthy discussion and concern relative to the recent 401k matching cut that happened as a result of COVID-19. I had acquaintances at other companies and was aware of competitors who had to lay off a significant number of team employees because of the financial impact. Catalyst chose to make a cut that allowed it to avoid doing that. That is consistent with the perspective that we value every team member in my opinion. Having been a veteran of layoffs at other places I was grateful for the approach, but some were definitely not. I also appreciated how the company brought back at least a portion of the benefit as soon as we could do so.
