The execs really have no idea what they're doing. They'll pretend to consult technical staff to inform business decisions, but will always end up going with whatever's got the lowest up front cost (even if it ends up being more expensive in the long run due to development effort, ongoing support, etc). The CEO appears to treat the company as a hobby; he drives a fancy car and turns down promising new locations for the head office because they're farther from home.

HCN is a start-up and face​s​ many challenges that are not always ​understood ​by each ​of our employees.​ We are committed to a great employee work experience and regret a poor review. Unfortunately, we have had to terminate employees who do not fit into our organisation or due to poor performance, which we feel was the underlying factor causing this negative review. This does not mean that we think we have no room for improvement, we are very sensitive to employee input and have consistently worked to improve our management skills and corporate culture, and have taken many concrete steps in this direction. In the last 6 months we've increased the communication of our business vision and goals with employees and made a lot of progress. I reiterate our open door policy and will continue to make time for issues that are brought to my attention. As we grow we intend to become one of Ottawa's 'best companies to work for'! Coworkers that encourage to solve challenging projects and eager to help. Developers encouraged to choose their own technical implementations as long as it is viable. If skills are a match then lateral move to various technical positions is possible. Good place for self-starters and people who take initiative. Work-life balance and flexible schedule depending on one's circumstances. Insurance, benefits and caring people. Free coffee, tea, water, sunlight from large windows, gym and occasionally snacks.

Svantaggi

Need for better communication and more transparency. Need for better salaries, as haggling for a raise is a major distraction. Need to eliminate politics to encourage meaningful collaboration. Some technical team members play politics over power and management style, when they have minimal management skills or experience.

The other previous reviews had incredibly valid points; however, management is listening now and things have vastly improved over the past months. Two way communication is great now across the team and is still improving. There's a lot more transparency now which has helped a lot with the overall confidence of the team in each other and leadership. Work/life balance is highly valued here. Unlike other typical startups you won't be worked to the bone here with 80 hour work weeks - just pull your weight, do your 40, and put in a little extra when the bursts come here and there. For those concerned about the risk of being in a startup - from a business standpoint, for 2018 we're looking very strong so I've got a pretty high confidence in our future. We have a new dev manager now who "gets it" and is facilitating better structure and communication across the organization. We've gotten away from the "wild west" approach of deployment and there's now a proper process involving planning, code review, QA, etc. We're also in a new office now that looks like a real workplace instead of someone's living room so that a vast improvement there. As stated in other reviews - there's a LOT of work to do and a lot of interesting problems to solve as a result. You won't get bored here. My advice to anyone interested in joining us is to be self-motivated, be willing to learn a broad spectrum of skills, and actually want to be here working on our projects. You'll need to be able to hit the ground running and will need to be able to independently contribute to the overall goals of the team. It'll be a challenge but don't be afraid to admit what you don't know. Don't be afraid to ask questions and don't be afraid to offer your opinion. We're all here to make a great product.

Make no mistake - this is still a small company that's in startup mode. There is inherent risk due to that and you're not going to get salaries and benefits equivalent to established companies. The ESOP and long term goals counterbalance this risk, however, in my opinion. The negative reviews have merit - things were bad here. If I would have written a review a year ago I likely would have said the same things the others have here. In the process of the company figuring itself out we did lose some really good people as a result. I'm concerned that we'll be challenged to find and retain the strong talent that we need.
