My experience at Howatson+Company was fantastic, even more so when compared to the advertising industry at large and my pervious experiences. The people policies are genuinely awesome, and I wish that more ad agencies had such policies in writing and practice. There were several examples of genuine care for people while I was there, going the extra mile to ensure those in unforeseen situations were supported. There's lots of investment in people, learning, social activities, and in mandatory workplace behaviour training courses, which is great to see. Chris Howatson has such an earnest, exciting, and contagious leadership style that is felt top down. The agency manages to run two offices: Melbourne & Sydney, that still feel connected. People across offices actually know each other and work seamlessly together. In the creative department, there’s constant effort put into ensuring everyone has something exciting to work on and is feeling creatively satisfied which is not an easy thing to do. Sure, there are busy times with the occasional hour or two spilling into overtime, but in my experience this didn’t happen too often. The creative operations team do a great job. You have the freedom to communicate when you’re too busy for something or need more time. They will sort it without question. I had no issues with flexible working and felt like I had permission to make decisions that were best for me to get my work done.
