Dear Anonymous, Mindset of an intern - An intern typically spends only a few months in the office. The industry is far more than what you would have experienced in that short period of time. Be humble. Do not expect everything to fall in place smoothly as we what we would like to have; after all you have not even started your career. Leadership - Advising the management "to take up firmer leadership" is a misrepresentation of IXA. The office has always believed in empowering all the staff to take on leadership roles while receiving close direction where necessary. This has been practiced in the form of assignment of team leaders, monthly programme ICs, structured trainings and almost daily ad hoc discussion of works, where necessary. Do recognize that the role of the management encompasses much scope of works out of the production of drawings. Do not expect the management to be sitting next to you to cad out that piece of drawing just to show a sign of comradeship. Everyone has a role to play for the company to function healthily. We have high expectations on the quality of our design works. And we ought to be taking ownership of our works and not expecting the management to be giving praises to every single little accomplishment. As you have mentioned, you were generally well guided and with very supportive colleagues around you. Micro management – It is not right to criticize that our principal micro manages the works. Team management is necessary to ensure quality work is delivered timely to our clients. Do appreciate that the management has made that extra effort to guide you. It is a sign that you probably require closer guidance, so that you could produce better results with less abortive works. Do not take for granted on the direct tutorship and direction you have gained from a senior practitioner, as it is not always a common practice elsewhere. With weekly open discussions in office, we can formulate better approaches and cultivate a positive culture as a team. Staff movement - You might have witnessed staff departure during your very short stint with us but do recognise that people do move on for personal reasons, and this is prevalent in every firm and industry. BIM manager - There is a misconception about the role of a BIM manager. At IXA, all staff receives regular trainings to handle BIM projects ourselves and our project typologies do not warrant a need for a BIM manager. I am confident that you have had a very fruitful internship as reflected in your detailed internship report and positive farewell speech.
