The benefits are unmatched and the culture is focused on growth and driving positive social change
Svantaggi
There isn't a strong community amongst coworkers, but its something the organization is working on. Everyone is really nice, but not super close.
Vantaggi
The people are very smart, professional, kind, friendly, and interesting. That's the best part. The pay is pretty generous for a nonprofit. MCF has a beautiful building - their uniquely styled offices are in a converted airplane hangar, and they have rotating art exhibits. There are often cool, fun events and speakers, and you really get to stay on the pulse of current events and local happenings, if. You enjoy that sort of thing, you're in for a treat. It's a great place to come to everyday and feel like you are making a difference and helping others - and that vibe is definitely in the air. Excellent benefits, including health, sick leave, doctor's appointment leave on top of that, 3 weeks paid vacation after you've been there a year, retirement 403(b) account they pay into 12% of your salary (regardless of whether you pay into it or not), 4 hours a month paid time to volunteer at any nonprofit in Marin during work hours, MCF will match your donation to any nonprofit nationwide with a donation to a Marin nonprofit of your choice. There is a strong work culture of being healthy and eating well, staying active, etc. They even have an ergonomic specialist come in and assess your workstation after you're hired! If you need encouragement in this area, it is very supportive atmosphere. However if you enjoy having free donuts, soda and the occasional birthday cake at work you're out of luck.
Svantaggi
There is some inconsistency in the way the various departments operate. Also departments can feel a little siloed at times. It is definitely a more formal, serious work culture at MCF – coworkers basically never go to happy hour together after work. But that could be a plus depending on your personality and style. They do have a lunchtime hula class though! I find personally that it can be very frustrating when you don't agree with some of the strategies that MCF is using to tackle local problems, or that the Foundation is unable to be effective on an issue due to local bureaucracy red tape, politics etc. for instance Marin's top two problems are lack of public transportation and lack of affordable housing, and there is only a limited amount that MCF can do about affordable housing, and almost nothing they can do about public transit. There is also a real lack of anywhere good to eat lunch around there, since you're basically in a residential neighborhood. Also, for most positions, there is no way to advance within the organization and you can feel a bit stuck.
