McMaster-Carr doesn't promote full time staff to management positions; rather, they seek recent college graduates from particular institutions. As one of those graduates, I found that they promoted "innovative" ideas but weren't actually open to these ideas. There was a lot of tension between management and staff--staff could never be promoted and were often far more competent than their supervisors. I found the atmosphere to be very negative, and the people to be untrustworthy (i.e., one manager was known from "back-stabbing") which made it difficult to ask questions. The company was trying to promote more female leadership, but there was no trust or unity amongst the female trainees as they were vying for promotions. Overall, I didn't feel it was a place where I could learn how to be a good leader and how to manage people--and the negative atmosphere led me to leave. As a trainee, you have to participate in inventory at least 1 time a month until you're promoted
