I worked at NCCER for a considerable time, and unfortunately, my experience was quite disheartening for several reasons: 1. Micromanagement and Distrust: Employees are confined to cubicles and regularly monitored by management, creating a demoralizing and stressful environment. 2. Discriminatory and Unfriendly to Neurodivergent Individuals: The environment is full of distractions with no way to minimize them, making it very difficult for neurodivergent employees to focus and be productive. The company’s stringent requirements and lack of ADA compliance make it a hostile workplace for those needing accommodations. 3. Problematic Leadership: The president is solely focused on the bottom line, often contradicting himself in meetings, which has become a running joke. This lack of clear direction fosters confusion and frustration. 4. Constant Panic and Pivot: Instead of addressing serious issues in communication, support, IT infrastructure, and leadership, the company frequently changes priorities abruptly after harshly critical Executive Leadership Team (ELT) meetings, impacting productivity and product quality. 5. Disregard for Health Conditions: Despite initially accommodating my serious health condition with a hybrid work arrangement, the company quickly changed its stance, eliminating remote work options for most employees except a few favored by the president. 6. High Turnover Rate: The turnover rate is alarmingly high. The company releases products without adequate support and relies heavily on expensive contracted development firms, leading to rushed and often flawed products due to unrealistic deadlines set by leadership. NCCER was challenging due to the toxic work environment, poor leadership, and chaotic management practices. Significant improvements are needed to create a healthier and more inclusive workplace.

NCCER has a great mission to educate people and provide them career opportunities in the construction industry. A big majority of the people who work here are kind, helpful, hard-working and always happy to support their co-workers. The benefits (especially retirement and health savings accounts) are great. The office is very nice. There’s an on-site gym. They provide snacks and coffee. They do an employee lunch or happy hour once every couple months.

Svantaggi

The work environment is not for everyone. If you have traditional employability traits (reliability, strong work ethic, prefer to work in-person, not overly focused on maximizing time off, etc.) you will do well and have opportunities to move up. If you need to work remotely or believe a company should allow you to take 2 or 3 months of time off every year, it will not be a good fit for you.

The people you will immediately work with (my experience is from Product Development) will feel like your work family. They will make hard days feel fun, they are organized, and they all excel at what they are hired to do. Its been a blessing to work with them. Good Mission. Good work/life balance. Good bonuses. Good location.

The company work culture is divided into an upper floor and a lower floor. A lot of times, There is not much communication on decisions being made from upper management which makes a lot of the projects arriving to production feel like a knee-jerk, last-minute decision that results in an inconsistent pace of work ranging from absolutely nothing in the pipe to an overwhelming batch of work with a suffocating timeline. Another point that I should mention is career growth opportunities feel a little stagnant. This said, I know that there is an active effort within management to address this pain point, so hopefully this changes soon.
