I was hired by two similar agencies at around the same time - Proofed and another. I jumped through all hoops for both companies. Compared to the other company, Proofed took a very long time to onboard me, and I had to attend late at night due to availability and restrictions. I felt somewhat condescended as I had to sit through a demonstration of 'how to proofread'. They pay a lot less than my other company, and they have me restricted to tiny jobs that are proofreading only (not editing) until I prove myself. Apart from that, there is no work on the board, ever! I mean I COULD sit here hitting refresh repeatedly, hoping I can snatch up a $5 job before some other desperate newbie, but in the meantime, I've risen through the ranks to become a highly rated editor working on long complex academic theses and earning a great living with the other company.
