The call center for this company was stressful. You shouldn't make people feel like they are forced to sell or, as you say it, "recommend" products and services to others while being yelled at because someone's card doesn't work. While the higher ups piggy back off our politeness, we get stuck making people feel awful because we can't do much of anything except offer them overdraft protection when they are over thousands in the negative. The training was good, the people in the call center were nice, but sitting at that phone listening to people rage is not fun at all.
