Working in the New York office, within the Division of Enforcement, was the worst professional experience in my career. Any mistake that an employee makes, it will follow you throughout your tenure at the SEC. A senior executive who oversaw our unit demonstrated racism by asking questions riddled with racist stereotypes, and this individual sets the tone in the workplace. He forces every supervisor to say at least one bad thing about each employee that a supervisor oversees. The training is a joke and your co-workers (including the majority of attorneys) are less than desirable human beings with lack of social, communication and professional skills. There is zero oversight from the top to assess employee morale, the effectiveness of managers delegating, motivating, giving useful feedback, etc. Perhaps this is because senior leadership lacks any training on how to manage and to lead effectively. I wasted my time dealing with both incompetent senior management and supervisors with threatening language, throwing employees under the bus and not offering any resources or actual teaching to improve and to develop new skills. Each supervisor keeps a binder that documents every mistake, complaint and compliment that you receive. Mistakes that you made in the past is routinely brought up during tense, unprofessional and unhelpful weekly meetings with your supervisor. Do not admit that you made a mistake because in the eyes of management, they see this as incompetence and not a learning opportunity to do better. Management loves to give out performance improvement plans and hides no secret to tell you that they have every right to "hire and fire you." Employees who went above and beyond the duties were highly discouraged and retaliated, especially if it rocked the boat reek with political ramifications. This is what we call regulatory capture. You can look up this term and this is something that exists among many sectors of the regulatory landscape. Lord knows why I stayed working in this environment until I found another opportunity and left the financial regulatory industry permanently. I gave two weeks notice and left quickly. On the last day of work, my supervisor snuck up behind me and when I turned around she was leaning over to see what I was doing. No apologies and no excuse me. I have never looked back at working at this corrosive and toxic dump. Many members of senior management, supervisors and co-workers still work in the office. So I wish you well if you want to cut your life span short by dealing with the unnecessary stress of an unforgiving and horrible work environment. Life is too short to settle with the status quo and to wait until you collect your federal pension, which is at least 20 years. I'll take a hard pass on that.
