There’s a culture of the other. I was one of the only lgbtq employees, the only one in the office. I was constantly fending off micro aggressions about my orientation. This workplace is incredibly conservative and makes no qualms about making others feel awkward by having frequent conversations about hot button politics in the office. I never chimed in on the talk and sat quietly while the other office personnel talked about everything from how much they loved chick-fil-a, to poisoning neighborhood cats, and “let’s go Brandon”. Even though I never expressed my own opinions I was fired before six weeks, a common practice of theirs that I had seen and had explained that if they didn’t “like” someone they terminated them before six weeks so they could not receive unemployment; because I was “not a fit.” The director of operations stated that it was not due to any performance issues and stated that he “couldn’t put a finger on” why I was not a fit. I received little to no training for the position besides learning as I went along and maybe two ten minute conversations about my job duties. I still became proficient at my duties in a month and was beginning to fix issues that they had expressed as being such. I was repeatedly talked over in conversation, as well as ignored when I had pertinent questions. I can only assume that this employer places an importance on having homogeneous group of like-minded individuals with little to no variation in personal life or beliefs, over having qualified individuals who can satisfactorily complete job duties that are literally just handed to them on a sheet of paper.
