Sigora operated successfully as a boy’s club for years, but now that they’ve got more than 5 employees, it’s time to change. Many of the people that have risen into leadership roles have done so not out of competence but simply because they outlasted people that wanted more from an employer. There is massive turnover, and instead of reflecting on why people leave, leadership tell themself a narrative that people “couldn’t keep up with the intensity of a growing business.” I’ve worked in plenty of intense work environments where people work long hours but stick around because they feel valued and respected. The benefits, while changing over time, still leave so much to be desired; the health insurance deductibles and max out-of-pocket are awful, and retirement and paid leave are lacking. The faster the company grows, the more corners are being cut to benefit the bottom line. I will not be surprised if this company finds themselves in the middle of a lawsuit either for a crappy installation or an HR issue. I’m not just one disgruntled employee; every week, I hear some different colleague complaining about feeling undervalued.
